Culture Incarnate: Native Anthropology from Russia

The old Soviet joke went that before the Revolution the national minorities knew only two feelings: cold and hunger, but that after the advent of Soviet power they came to know three: cold, hunger - and a deep sense of gratitude. Behind the grim humour there lay not just a recognition that non-Russians were second-class citizens in economic terms, but that they also had cultures and life-styles of their own, cultural identities which had been saved to a degree by Sovietisation, but also warped or dwarfed by it. Sovietisation also masked the thoroughly unhealthy rivalry between various ethnic minorities.

Pertamina, Cari-Cari Alasan ?

Sekitar sebulan lalu, untuk pertama kalinya saya melihat antrian panjang minyak tanah. Ini sungguh pemandangan menyedihkan sebagai suatu bangsa. Saya sudah lupa, berapa harga minyak tanah di pasaran. Mengingat, sudah lama keluarga saya tidak menggunakan kompor minyak.

Sabtu (22/3) kemarin, saya berkunjung ke salah satu kampus ngetop di Surabaya. Perhatian saya tertuju pada layanan pencarian kerja yang terletak di sudut gedung. Dulu sepertinya, di sana hanya dimanfaatkan sebagai ruang baca, tempat mahasiswa berdiskusi, membaca buku, atau mengerjakan tugas kuliahnya.

King Airlangga

The famous ‘Calcutta Stone’, dating from A.D. 1041, describes a terrible calamity which befell the East Javanese kingdom of Isana in the early years of the 11th century. A rebellion incited by a jealous vassal king resulted in the destruction of the capital of Watugaluh. The reigning king, Dharmawangsa, successor to Sri Makutawangsawardhana, was murdered along with his entire family. Only the young Airlangga, who was aged about 16 at the time, managed to escape unharmed.
